In another post, we discussed a study that showed that many CEOs of large companies were sociopaths. Interestingly enough, since we talked about that, I’ve watched for evidence. I’ve run into some people that have their own businesses that I’d now categorize as sociopathic. In every case, the company doesn’t last long. There is about 5 - 10 years before the sociopath just can’t keep up the pretense of caring about other people and the service and products his company offers. On the other hand, it seemed that big companies are big enough and anonymous enough that they can hide out. But, even that has changed as we’ve seen the biggest, baddest and greediest of the companies come down.
Then we had some posts about the prevalence of adult ADD in successful entrepreneurs. That one seems to make some sense, if the definition of ADD means that you can hop around from task to task and still complete them. I have a feeling I’d have been labeled as ADD if it had been popular when I was in school. I was a straight A student, but got kicked out of a lot of classes for being disruptive. (I’d get done with my homework and then go talk to someone.)
Yesterday, Jorge sent me a link about bi-polar entrepreneurs. Hmm - think he’s trying to tell me something? But, you know there does seem to be something to this. Read the article and let me know what you think! http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2008/10/03/harnessing-entrepreneurial-manic-depression-making-the-rollercoaster-work-for-you/#more-530

ADD almost seems to be a prerequisite for successful business owners. Multiple ideas and taking action quickly– it’s a gift.
I had never thought much about bipolar for CEOs, but I surely had for politicians… tilting toward gregarious mania– it explains why so many politicians get caught up in sex scandals. They see themselves as invincible and above common rules (oh yeah, does that sound a bit sociopathic? hm).
