One of my strategies has always been to build a database. For every business activity - is this making money? and if not, is this building my database?
And to be honest, there is something rather nice to sit around with the “big boys” and talk about the size of my database. So, there’s some ego involved too.
That’s why it’s fascinating to look at what my two biggest database builders were this past month. #1: The free teleseminar. I’m still blown away that 3/4 of the people who attempted to sign up were NOT in my database. I’m going to plan to do one of these a month and put a lot of thought (like I did with this last one) on the topic, headline and copy. If I can continue to pick up database like this, it’s a very good thing.
#2: I had thought that eventually this blog would build my database. There is no revenue generation here, so the idea was that we’d grow organically and pick up database. I think that is working. But, there is another one that is hands down the winner - www.DKTaxServices.com. The automatic tax news lead is getting a very diverse following with comments posting regularly. You might not see them all because they are attaching to the articles, which update every hour. And for some reason the “post” button to the side is not capturing them yet. It’s just another one of the glitches to work out.
I still haven’t done any PR or promotion outside this and the TaxLoopholes site, but we are getting a regular following already. I think they are coming because of the articles and current news. It’s not a homerun yet, but I think it soon will be. It’s ironic that when I do long tail searches for tax related topics these days that the top spots almost always come from one of my sites. That makes me very, very happy.

Ross Goldberg has an interesting 7-minute video about using Google to help a person find leads:
