One of my new strategies is to look for niches. The secret to wealth in the Internet age, per “The Long Tail” is to make a little amount of money in a lot of areas. Don’t look for the blockbuster, look for making some money in a lot of areas.
So, my “big market” is tax planning, strategies, education, seminars, books….basically all things “tax.” I had the first tax book to ever become an evergreen best-seller. But, now what? The market for tax is so big it’s almost impossible to get your arms around. So, I’ve spent the last 7 years since “Loopholes of the Rich” (my first book) building a business, but often without a clear focus.
Now, I’m consciously looking at markets. I’ve found two that I think are huge and there is NO ONE in them yet. In one case, I stumbled upon a high income business group that was small. Almost all subscribed to a magazine (about 30,000 subscriptions). Any one of these people would be ideal clients for me. So, Carolyn (my fearless assistant and friend, who never sees a challenge too big) called the magazine up and pitched me for their financial section. The Editor almost jumped through the phone she was so excited. They sent me their latest edition and I couldn’t believe the articles in the “financial section”. One was on the dangers of children swallowing magnets. Another was on how to limit liability from helping strangers. There was NOTHING on taxes or financial planning. And, these guys average $500,000 per year in net income.
I’ll be very happy to contribute articles to this group! So, Jorge is quickly building a landing page to get the leads that I’m sure will come out of these articles!
And in case you wondered, if your child swallows magnets they can pinch off pieces of the intestines as they cling to each other. It’s pretty serious. But then, so is your tax planning!
I’ll tell you about the 2nd niche tomorrow…and how I discovered this one.
